13th June 2012
Hiking - Walking: Two hills - Surrey Wind Direction: Wind Stength: Surf / Sea State: Air Temperature: Sea Temperature: Weather: sunny periods Max Speed: Distance Covered: 7 (Nautical Miles - unless stated otherwise)
Tuesday 12th June 2012 – travelling with late walk – mainly rain :(
We packed up and were on the way to the shuttle just before 9 and were
loaded by 10 for a 10.20 crossing. We woke up to blue skies but it soon
clouded over and when we got off the shuttle it was pouring with rain as
expected :( Kent was a deluge and although we did see some Oust houses
which I was hoping to see the journey was pretty dire and depressed us
both. We were aiming for Bewl water for lunch and when we got there it was
£4 each to get in!!!! We only wanted to sit in the car park and eat our
dinner so even though the woman offered us buy one get one free we still
declined and left! We drove a bit further and parked near some ruins you
had to pay to go into and just sat in the car park – we could see them
and that was enough on such a wet and fowl day:( It didn’t help that we
got lost a couple of times either! We eventually plugged the sat nav in
because our England map is abit rubbish. Arrived at Ewhurst about 4 and had
a cuppa in the car park – it wasn’t raining!! We read then met up with
Rob and had a lovely evening. We went for a long walk and saw a deer, a
fox and a woodpecker and lots of early marsh Orchids Went to the
pizza express in cranleigh for a meal and chat. He had so much to tell us
with Ukraine, wales, camping in Oxfordshire and all sorts! We came back
and parked the van in the car park, got it ready for the night then sat in
here with rob and looked at photos and had a good chat:)
Wednesday 13th June 2012 – walk **** sunny periods
Amazingly woke up to blue skies!!! That was a surprise with the forecast.
Rob popped in to say hello before work. We set off on the Two hill walk
– Holmbury Hill and Pitch Hill from Sayers Croft at about 10 a.m. We
stopped at the village shop and got an apple, a choc bar, some fruit polos
and a paper then followed the written instructions. It was really lovely,
lots of great scenery, lots of woodland, hundreds of foxgloves, 2 deer, a
fox, lots of squirrels, guinea fowl, horses, cows, sheep and a buzzard:)
We didn’t get lost at all – amazingly for us! We had our picnic in two
halves, one on the top of each hill. It was about 7 miles in total and we
were out for 6 hours. I reckon we spent about an hour overall having a
rest and eating lunch etc.. Some of it was quite muddy but considering the
weather they have had not too bad. At one point we had to go through the
grounds of a very posh school where the older kids were getting ready to
play cricket and the tiny ones were playing in the woods. Very strange to
be walking through there really! Then when we got back to Sayers Croft we
had to walk through the grounds and felt a bit self conscious but were
pleased when a couple of instructors did approach us because it would have
seemed a bit weird to let two adults wander round with so many kids on
site. We went into the canteen with Rob for dinner and had roast beef, 3
huge roast potatoes and cabbage and bread and butter pudding with custard
:) We sat outside on the picnic table and ate it. Afterwards we went over
to the high ropes with all the gear for me to have a go and it ended up
with Mag having a go too!!! This is really not her cup of tea but she did
really well :) I think even she was surprised when she completed the
course! Went over to one of the accommodation blocks – the one with the
best tv and watched the football!
Thursday 14th June 2012 – a little walk and then home after 90 days away
!!!
Mag went for a walk around the fields before breakfast and saw the deer
again:) Rob came over and we had cereal for breakfast together then we
drove to Leith Hill which has a folly tower at the top (similar to the one
near the orwell bridge). We did get a bit lost but found it after driving
through some great countryside and villages. We came back to Sayers Croft
for lunch – wraps and the salad bar – a choice of beef or chicken with
carrot cake for afters:) We left about one and went to get the board I
bought on e-bay before we went away. It was quite a complicated route but
the sat nav got us there. Collected that ok then drove through dreadful
traffic home, calling at South Mimms for a coffee and muffin. We got home
about 6.30 and called at the dip on the way. There were quite a few out
sailing so stopped for a chat with Mark. Got home and got the stuff that
needed washing out of the van then had a much needed bath!!!
